Areas Governed…

The 1st Chakra is all about survival and self preservation. It’s where we handle our physical needs, our strength, our trust and grounding. We use this Chakra to provide ourselves and our family with security, safety, prosperity and home. It is located at the top of the pubic bone.

When In Balance…

We are provided with good health and feel grounded, safe and secure. Comfortable in our own skin, we feel a sense of trust in the world, know that we have a right to livelihood and feel relaxed as we go through each day.

When Excessive…

We will tend to hoard things, over eat or become obese. We may be greedy, feel lazy, have a fear of change and have very rigid boundaries.

When Deficient…

We may feel fearful or anxious. We may experience a disconnection from our body and become underweight. There may also be difficulty in focusing and financial matters, we may have poor boundaries in place and suffer from chronic disorganization.

Healing the Chakra

When the Root Chakra is out of balance, it’s important to reconnect with the body. Essential oils can support this process by grounding and stabilizing your energy. Oils such as vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood, and myrrh are especially beneficial. These can be diffused, applied (diluted) to the base of the spine or soles of the feet, or used during massage or yoga practices to enhance grounding.

In addition to aromatherapy, physical activity such as walking, yoga, or massage supports reconnection. Incorporate more protein-rich foods, as well as red fruits and vegetables like beets, tomatoes, strawberries, and red peppers to nourish this chakra. Carrying grounding stones—like hematite, garnet, or red jasper—or placing them on the Root Chakra can enhance balance.

Imbalances in this chakra may manifest as physical issues, including hip, knee, leg, or lower back pain, arthritis, male reproductive issues, muscle tension, bowel disorders, eating disorders, or chronic fatigue. Consistent use of grounding essential oils can be a powerful complement to other holistic practices for restoring balance and vitality.
